Tesla was founded in 2003 and is primarily known as a manufacturer of electric vehicles. Since introducing the Tesla Bot in 2022, the company has been developing a universal humanoid robot under the name Optimus, which is initially being tested in its own production facilities. Tesla is listed on the NASDAQ (ticker: TSLA).
The Optimus Gen 2 has been in use at the Fremont and Giga Texas facilities since 2024 for tasks such as battery cell sorting, parts handling, and quality inspection. The third generation (Gen 3) features 22 degrees of freedom in the hands and a total of 50 actuators; hand production began in January 2026. The system relies on Tesla's proprietary end-to-end AI architecture, which was adapted from vehicle development.
As one of the world's most valuable companies, Tesla has substantial resources for humanoid development. Internal testing in its own factories provides real training data at a scale that most competitors cannot achieve. Optimus is currently not commercially available; external sales have not been announced.
