RIVR Technologies AG was founded in 2023 as a spin-off from the Robotic Systems Lab at ETH Zurich, initially under the name Swiss-Mile, and rebranded in early 2025. The company builds wheeled-legged delivery robots and was acquired by Amazon on March 19, 2026. It was founded by Marko Bjelonic, Lorenz Wellhausen, Giorgio Valsecchi, and Alexander Reske.
The robots combine two modes of locomotion: each of the four legs ends in a wheel; on flat terrain it rolls, and before stairs and curbs the device rears up and walks. RIVR ONE carries over thirty kilograms, travels up to fourteen kilometers per hour, and has a range of over thirty kilometers. The successor RIVR TWO holds 55 liters, is loaded from above, and releases the package downward by having the robot sit down.
Field deployments ran with Evri, Veho in Texas, Just Eat Takeaway, as well as Swiss Post and Migros Online. The acquisition by Amazon demonstrates where the real bottleneck in delivery lies: not in the journey to the address, but in the last twenty meters involving stairwells and doorbells. The seed round of 22 million US dollars was led in 2024 by Bezos Expeditions and HongShan, among others.
