Boston Dynamics was founded in 1992 as a spin-off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Waltham. Since 2020, the Hyundai Motor Group has held a majority stake in the company. With around 1,500 employees, Boston Dynamics develops robots that rank among the most well-known of their kind worldwide.
The portfolio comprises three main products: the electric humanoid Atlas for industrial applications, the quadruped inspection robot Spot, and the warehouse robot Stretch for order picking. By 2026, Stretch will have unloaded over 20 million cartons according to the company. Series production of the new Atlas generation started in March 2026.
Spot is in commercial use in over 40 countries and is considered the standard reference for mobile inspection robots. Hyundai is investing 26 billion US dollars in US production capacity with a planned annual capacity of 30,000 robot units. Boston Dynamics has shaped public perception of robotics for decades.
