Overview

Spot from Boston Dynamics is the quadruped robot that even people who otherwise have no interest in robotics know about. Since June 2020, it has been sold regularly, and according to the manufacturer, over 1,500 units are in operation. Since December 2020, Boston Dynamics has been majority-owned by the Hyundai Motor Group.

Design

The robot measures 110 centimeters in length and stands 61 centimeters high in walking mode, with a maximum of 70 and minimum of 52. With battery, it weighs 32.7 kilograms. Twelve joints are distributed across the four legs. On its back is a mounting surface of 850 by 240 millimeters with a DB25 connector, which allows for up to 14 kilograms of payload, such as the also available gripper arm. An IP54 protection rating and a temperature range of minus 20 to plus 55 degrees allow for outdoor operation.

Technology and AI

Spot handles inclines up to 30 degrees and steps up to 30 centimeters in height; maximum speed is 1.6 meters per second. Environmental visibility covers 360 degrees up to four meters distance. The 564-watt-hour battery lasts approximately 90 minutes in operation and 180 minutes in standby mode; it charges in one hour. The robot is connected via WiFi in both frequency bands or Ethernet.

Market Significance

At the online launch in 2020, Boston Dynamics quoted $74,500 USD, but today the company no longer publishes a price and only sells by quote. Configured units are observed to be significantly higher. Spot has practically single-handedly established the category of quadruped inspection robots and remains the benchmark against which Chinese and European providers measure themselves.
