BYD was founded in Shenzhen in 1995 and is today one of the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturers. Since 2022, the Embodied Intelligence research team has been developing robotic systems initially intended for internal use in BYD's own manufacturing plants.
BYD's robotics portfolio comprises collaborative robot arms, mobile robots and humanoid systems. The development program code-named Yao-Shun-Yu aims at autonomous humanoid robots that BYD plans to gradually deploy in production starting in 2025. The company has announced plans to invest approximately 14 billion US dollars in AI.
As a publicly listed industrial conglomerate, BYD brings substantial manufacturing capacities and process expertise to the robotics market. The strategic focus is on automating its own plants, which gives the company direct real-world testing capabilities. Long-term external commercialization of the technology is not ruled out.
Founded in Shenzhen as a battery and electronics manufacturer.
