About the Company

Overview

Hanson Robotics was founded in 2007 by sculptor and engineer David Hanson in Hong Kong. The company specializes in developing human-like, socially interactive robots. It combines artistic design with robotic functionality and conducts research at the intersection of art, science, and technology.

Technology and Products

The centerpiece of the portfolio is Sophia, a humanoid robot with an expressive face that demonstrates natural language processing and social interaction. Sophia was unveiled in 2016 and gained worldwide recognition. Another robot is BINA48, which was developed based on interviews with a real person. The technology features elastic skin made from Frubber as well as facial mechanics capable of producing approximately 60 different expressions.

Market Significance

Hanson Robotics is less a mass production manufacturer than a research and demonstration company that has significantly shaped public discourse about humanoid robots. Sophia appeared as a UN ambassador and received Saudi Arabian citizenship in 2017, which caused considerable international attention. In commercial serial production, however, the company plays a rather marginal role.
