AheadForm was founded in Shanghai in June 2024 by Yuhang Hu, who previously worked on the robot head Emo at the Creative Machines Lab at Columbia University. The company maintains offices in Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, and New York, and has completed six rounds of financing in less than two years, most recently an A1 round in April 2026 totaling several hundred million yuan.
The heads work with brushless micromotors and proprietary silicone bionic skin, manufactured with precision below half a millimeter and on some models even displaying the pattern of blood vessels. The pupils contain RGB cameras. The Origin M1 features up to 25 micromotors, the commercially available Origin F1 has 26 degrees of freedom, and the Elf series features over 30. In early 2026, the team published a cover story in Science Robotics on realistic lip movements.
The Origin F1 is the first device of its kind with an openly communicated price range of 50,000 to 150,000 USD depending on configuration, and is already being delivered to corporate customers. This transforms the bionic head from a special project into a calculable capital investment. The Elf series simultaneously demonstrates an alternative path: by building a fantasy character instead of a human, one sidesteps the expectation of perfect likeness from the outset.
