Overview

The Origin M1 is the head that made AheadForm famous. When the Shanghai-based company released a video in September 2025 showing the head blinking, twitching, and nodding, it went viral worldwide and reignited the debate about the uncanny valley. AheadForm was founded in June 2024 by Yuhang Hu, who previously worked on the robot head Emo at Columbia University's Creative Machines Lab.

Construction

Up to 25 brushless micromotors work inside the head. RGB cameras are embedded in the pupils, and microphones and speakers are integrated. The skin is made of silicone, and the base version is hairless and bald. Notably, the manufacturer does not hide the mechanics at the neck: wiring and motors remain visible during operation, so the head reveals itself as a machine. Since October 2025, there has been a half-body version with neck and torso.

Technology and AI

The head can be connected to speech and image models. AheadForm offers a special version for a game franchise with 30 movable muscle units, twelve microexpressions, dual-camera vision, and a second-generation bionic skin that is constantly maintained at 36.5 degrees. The company provides no information on processing core, mass, or weight. In early 2026, the team published a cover story in Science Robotics about realistic lip movements.

Market Significance

No individual price for the M1 has been published; as of October 2025, it was not yet commercially available. AheadForm has completed six funding rounds since its founding, including an A1 round in April 2026 for several hundred million yuan. The M1 marks the point at which the question is no longer whether a robot head can appear human, but whether it should.
