MIRALab is the research group led by Nadia Magnenat Thalmann that developed the android Nadine. The project began in 2013 at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and is now continued at the University of Geneva, giving it a Swiss connection.
Nadine is approximately 1.70 meters tall and features 27 degrees of freedom for facial expressions and upper body movement. Japanese specialist Kokoro built the hardware in 2013, while the software and articulated hands come from the research group itself. The android conducts independent multilingual conversations, recognizes individuals, and has long-term memory. The 2025 version works with its own deep learning framework called N-Core.
Nadine is not for sale, but it has something to show that is almost completely lacking in this industry: documented deployments over years. In 2017, she welcomed over 100,000 visitors at the ArtScience Museum Singapore; from 2018 to 2019, she worked for insurance company AIA as the world's first humanoid customer advisor; afterward, she accompanied residents at a nursing home for a full year. These are exactly the long-term data sets that commercial providers lack.
