Furhat Robotics was founded in 2014 as a spin-off of the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. The eponymous head is today the standard platform in research on human-robot interaction and is used at universities around the world.
The approach differs fundamentally from all other providers: the face contains not a single actuator; instead, the face is projected onto a translucent mask from inside. Only the neck moves, with three degrees of freedom. The device weighs 3.5 kilograms, measures 41 centimeters, and projects using a DLP unit from Texas Instruments. Perception includes a wide-angle camera and a microphone array with a range of up to five meters. FurhatOS supports 120 languages and can track up to ten people simultaneously.
The advantage of projection lies in research: skin color, age, gender, and eye shape can be changed via software without touching the hardware. For studies on perception and bias, this is nearly irreplaceable. Furhat discloses its prices openly, USD 35,000 for the standard version and 55,000 for premium, which is the exception in this industry.
