ugo was founded in 2018 and is headquartered in Tokyo's Chiyoda ward, led by Takeshi Matsui. It became known for robots that perform security patrols, inspections, and reception tasks. What the machine cannot accomplish on its own is handled remotely by a human operator. This interplay of autonomy and teleoperation runs through the entire product range.
The product family includes the service robots ugo Pro, ugo Ex, and ugo mini, as well as the software platform ugo Platform. In September 2026, the wheel-based semi-humanoid ugo Nova was added: two arms with seven joints each, a torso with 35 centimeters of stroke, a Mecanum drive base, and an NVIDIA Jetson Thor as the compute unit. Nova can be teleoperated via VR headset or through bilateral control from partner Asratec. The movements recorded during operation are intended to serve as training data for AI models.
With Nova, ugo moves into the center of Japan's Physical AI efforts. The robot was developed within the framework of a NEDO project and was proposed by the AIRoA association as a common platform for a national competition to develop universal robots. Since design and manufacturing are entirely based in Japan, ugo is among the few domestic suppliers that can offer something to counter Chinese wheel-based humanoids. Series production is planned for 2027.
