Spirit AI was founded in February 2024 in Hangzhou by CEO Han Fengtao, who previously conducted research at UC Berkeley and Tsinghua University. The startup positions itself as the Chinese counterpart to Physical Intelligence from San Francisco and has collected over 200,000 hours of interaction data for its embodied AI models since its founding.
The Moz1 is a humanoid robot with 26 degrees of freedom and continuous force control throughout the entire body. A payload-to-weight ratio of 1:1 and proprietary high-torque joints enable fine motor tasks such as laundry folding, office sorting, and handling flexible objects without task-specific retraining. The underlying language action model ViLa and the constraint model CoPa have been open source since January 2026.
The Spirit-v1.5 model ranked 1st on the RoboChallenge evaluation leaderboard in January 2026 with a task success rate exceeding 50 percent, surpassing Physical Intelligence's pi0.5. A financing round of nearly 2 billion yuan in early 2026 with investors such as Yunfeng Capital, HongShan, and state funds from Hangzhou and Chongqing elevates Spirit AI to the league of China's most established AI robotics startups.
