Sanctuary AI was founded in 2018 in Vancouver and focuses on connecting humanoid hardware with a learning-capable AI system called Carbon. According to the company, it has gone through eight hardware generations and first deployed commercially at Canadian Tire in 2023. Investors include Magna International, Zeon Corporation, and Accenture Ventures, among others.
The Phoenix Gen 8 (170 cm, 70 kg, 25 kg payload capacity) operates on a wheeled base, deliberately chosen for industrial stability. The hands are hydraulic and offer 20 degrees of freedom as well as force sensors in the millinewton range. The Carbon AI system translates voice commands into physical actions and can learn new tasks in less than 24 hours. The same AI system runs on various hardware platforms, including a Franka robot arm.
Sanctuary AI holds over 250 global patent assets and is listed by Morgan Stanley among the three most active filers in the humanoid robot patent space. Early automotive customers use Phoenix for wire harness assembly with a documented success rate of over 99.5 percent. Hannover Messe 2025 was the company's largest European presence to date.
