OpenLoong is an initiative of Humanoid Robot (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. and the Shanghai Humanoid Robotics Manufacturing Innovation Center, established in December 2023 with registered capital of one billion yuan. In May 2024, China's Ministry of Industry appointed the center as the national innovation center for humanoid robots. The open-source components are provided via the OpenAtom Foundation.
The Qinglong is China's first fully open-source humanoid platform: 185 cm tall, 80 kg, 43 active degrees of freedom, peak torque 400 Nm, and computing power of 400 TOPS. The 7-axis arm with five-finger hand and tactile sensors is open source, as is the dynamics and control software on GitHub. The platform is specifically designed for research groups and universities worldwide.
As a state-backed open-source project, OpenLoong holds a special position in the global humanoid market: while other manufacturers develop proprietary systems, Shanghai is pursuing an open foundation that enables rapid further development by external research groups. Naming new models after Chinese zodiac signs and the goal of training a thousand robots simultaneously by 2027 underscore the long-term horizon.
