OpenDroids was founded in March 2024 by Abhishek Gupta, Jackson Jesionowski and Ashish Gupta in San Francisco. The start-up is pursuing an open platform strategy for mobile manipulators intended for use in households as well as in gastronomy and rehabilitation facilities.
The single-arm R1D1 features 6 degrees of freedom, a reach of 62 centimeters and a payload limit of 3 kilograms. It navigates autonomously on a mobile base and docks itself independently for charging. The dual-arm R2D3 was unveiled at CES in January 2025 and demonstrated laundry folding and dishwashing cleanup. The list price for the R1D1 is 18,500 US dollars, with the R2D3 targeting around 60,000 US dollars.
With more affordable manipulators, OpenDroids is addressing a market between pure industrial robots and full humanoids. Conversations with Baskin-Robbins and Subway about pre-orders for the R1D1 demonstrate the focus on commercial service operations. The company is still in an early stage of development.
