Overview

Northstar is UMA's first humanoid robot, short for Universal Mechanical Assistant. The Paris-based startup was founded by Remi Cadene, who built the first neural networks for Tesla's Optimus and later created the open-source LeRobot platform at Hugging Face. On July 7, 2026, the company unveiled the machine's design at the Machina Summit. Teams are based in Paris, London, and Geneva.

Design

UMA calls the concept the clothed machine: human-sized proportions, a neutral visor instead of a face, and a soft technical outer shell beneath which the joints remain deliberately visible. The first version operates on wheels rather than legs and is designed to be significantly lighter than a human, which mitigates collision risks. Two variants are planned: a dual-arm industrial version for warehouses and assembly, and a more compact version for hospitals and laboratories.

Technology and AI

The platform's core is so-called Real-Time Learning. The robot is designed to acquire new capabilities through demonstration and instruction rather than being reprogrammed for each task, and to continuously improve during operation. The founding team brings experience from Tesla, Google DeepMind, and Hugging Face; advisors include Turing Prize winner Yann LeCun and Hugging Face co-founder Thomas Wolf.

Market Significance

UMA deliberately focuses on Europe as its first market, with the USA and Asia to follow. According to the company, discussions are underway with roughly 50 interested parties, and pilot projects in logistics and industry are planned for 2026. The company is backed by investors such as Greycroft and Kima Ventures. Notably from a Swiss perspective: one of the young company's three locations is in Geneva.
