Overview

According to the company, the GD01 from Unitree Robotics is the world's first series-production piloted mecha walker. The machine was unveiled on May 12, 2026. Unlike typical work humanoids, the GD01 is a vehicle: a human climbs into an open cockpit in the fuselage and operates it from there. First deliveries are planned for the first quarter of 2027, initially to research partners.

Construction

At approximately 2.80 meters tall, the GD01 is an impressive sight. With pilot, it weighs about 500 kilograms and can carry up to 50 kilograms of additional payload. Striking features include the glossy red armor panels on the fuselage and limbs as well as the silvery metal cage of the cockpit. The trick is in the name: the machine transitions from two legs to four and thus handles uneven terrain. On foot, the GD01 travels at around five kilometers per hour, slightly faster in short bursts.

Technology and AI

The GD01 relies less on autonomous AI and more on direct pilot control. Unitree brings its experience in building walking machines to bear, particularly in balance and gait switching. Per charge, the machine runs for about two hours. The concept is deliberately reminiscent of mechs from film and games.

Market Significance

The base price is around 3.9 million Yuan, approximately 650,000 USD. Unitree names industry, emergency services, and leisure and tourism as target markets. For Unitree, known primarily for quadruped robots and compact humanoids, the GD01 is a spectacular brand ambassador that underscores the company's technical range.
