Overview

Abi is a social companion robot from Australian company Andromeda Robotics, based in Melbourne and founded in 2022. The robot is designed for elderly care and assisted living and is now also available in the USA. The goal is to provide residents with companionship and combat loneliness.

Design

Abi is a compact social humanoid standing approximately 110 to 120 centimeters tall, which is intentionally designed to appear approachable. The robot features expressive digital eyes, animated facial expressions, and gesture-capable arms with 15 degrees of freedom in the upper body.

Technology and AI

Abi uses machine vision and a language system powered by GPT-4. This enables the robot to recognize individuals, answer questions, and tailor conversations based on previous interactions. Its capabilities include multilingual conversation, storytelling and jokes, as well as entertainment such as music, games, and movement exercises.

Market Significance

Andromeda Robotics has completed a Series A financing round of 23 million dollars to scale production to up to 100 units per month. With this, the company aims to serve the growing demand from care facilities worldwide and responds to staffing shortages in the care sector.
