Overview

Calvin-40 is the first industrial robot from Paris-based Wandercraft, which until then had exclusively built medical exoskeletons. According to the manufacturer, the first prototype was created in 40 days, and since April 2025 a unit has been operating at the Renault plant in Douai, hauling tires for the Renault 5. In early September 2026, Wandercraft reported twelve major customers from automotive, logistics, retail, healthcare and defense.

Design

The robot measures approximately 170 centimeters and weighs about 80 kilograms. What stands out is what is missing: Calvin-40 has no head. The torso ends flat above the shoulders; instead, cameras for environmental perception and orientation are mounted at hip height and work day and night. The structure combines an aluminum frame with composite cladding; the IP54 protection rating allows use in dusty warehouses. The hands are modular—depending on the task, grippers, suction cups, or dexterous hands can be mounted.

Technology and AI

Control runs on NVIDIA Jetson hardware with Isaac and ROS 2. The robot is operated by voice: the employee states the task, a visual language model translates it into a movement plan. However, the core is not the voice layer but rather the self-balancing control system derived from the Atalante exoskeletons, which Wandercraft has tested on spinal cord patients for over a decade. This very control system enables the robot to carry 40 kilograms while walking without losing balance.

Market Significance

Renault intends to put 350 units into operation within eighteen months, with regular series delivery announced for the first half of 2027. This makes Calvin-40 one of the few European humanoids that operates not as a demonstration object but in shift work at an automotive plant. For the European market, this is an argument that numerous announcements from Asia have so far failed to deliver.
