Overview

Lumi is the first robot developed by San Francisco startup Lightberry and was unveiled on August 26, 2026. Founded in 2025, the company does not come from mechanical engineering but from conversational AI, and has so far positioned itself as a software layer for third-party robots. With Lumi, it is embedding this layer into its own device for the first time. Reservations are open, with delivery scheduled for 2026.

Construction

The robot measures 130 centimeters and weighs around 40 kilograms, making it significantly smaller than an adult. The mechanics come from the Unitree G1: 29 degrees of freedom in the body, plus a custom-designed neck with three axes for nodding, shaking, and tilting, as well as a parallel gripper, totaling 34 degrees of freedom. Assembly takes place in San Francisco. Optically, Lightberry deliberately takes a different approach than the industry: sun-yellow shell, white arms, a round head with two animated eyes. The robot is designed to look like a character rather than a machine.

Technology and AI

An NVIDIA Jetson Thor T4000 series serves as the computing core with 64 gibibytes of shared memory. Each eye delivers 1920 by 1200 pixels at 30 frames per second, while an eight-channel microphone array with directional focus—specifically tuned to filter out the robot's fan noise—handles audio. A 10-gigabit network connection is available for external sensors, along with two USB-C ports. The proprietary Lightberry OS divides the workload: perception and movement run locally on the device, while speech understanding operates in the cloud. The battery holds 421 watt-hours and provides between two and a half to three and a half hours of operation.

Market Significance

The Founder Edition is limited to 100 units and costs 39 990 US-Dollars, with software adding 20 000 US-Dollars per year. Lumi is clearly targeting companies and institutions, not households. Notably, there is a division of labor behind this: Lightberry purchases the mechanics and profits from perception, speech, and behavior. One risk remains the origin of the hardware, as the company states that import restrictions for foreign robots in the USA are not yet definitively clarified.
