Overview

Yogi was a humanoid robot from US startup Cartwheel Robotics based in Nevada, which emerged from obscurity in 2025. Unlike most major humanoid companies, Cartwheel did not target factories but explicitly aimed at the home, emotional connection, and companionship.

Design

The prototype was approximately 76 centimeters tall and featured more than 50 degrees of freedom for expressive gestures and realistic locomotion. Yogi was to be made from medical-grade silicone and protective soft materials to ensure safety and comfort in handling. The large head, round eyes, and slightly plump form were deliberately designed so that the robot appeared more like a character than a machine.

Technology and AI

Cartwheel developed what is called a Motion Language Model, which was intended to generate natural, diverse, and personalized behaviors for Yogi. This enabled real-time generated movements such as dances or individual walking patterns designed to convey emotions.

Market Significance

Cartwheel Robotics was led by Scott LaValley and prioritized emotional connection over industrial tasks. The company also explored applications in healthcare. However, according to reports, Cartwheel had to cease operations as it was unable to raise sufficient capital to bring Yogi to market readiness.
